So what is the Advisory speed limits outside schools?

In this situation, the advisory speed limit is 20 mph when the school warning lights are flashing, which usually occurs during school opening and closing times.

If children are present or likely to be nearby, you should drive at 20 mph to give yourself more time to react to any unexpected situations. Children can be unpredictable and may suddenly step or run into the road.

When the lights are not flashing and there are no children around, you may drive at the normal 30 mph speed limit, as long as it is safe to do so and the road conditions allow.

We strongly recommend reducing your speed to 20 mph whenever children are nearby, as travelling at a lower speed helps you stop more quickly and safely if a child unexpectedly enters your path.

School warning lights typically flash during the busiest times for children arriving at and leaving school. These times are usually 8:00 am to 9:00 am in the morning and 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the afternoon.
